In seeking answers to art, we often turn to the sciences. It is therefore not surprising mathematics tries to explain the enigma behind facial beauty and the science of attractiveness. However, there is a problem; mathematics is quantifiable while art stands in a cloak of mystique and the unquantifiable. Indeed, perhaps the only time art is quantified is in monetary terms when it is sold.
Retrospective analysis – making the maths fit the art
It is not long before one comes across ‘artist beauty’ and the ‘golden ratio’ in cosmetic dentistry. The ratio is derived from the fibonacci sequence. There are numerous articles written about it in architecture proportions, flower petals and facial and dental ‘beauty’. However, I question the application of the golden ratio to the art of cosmetic dentistry. I often see this as a tendency to make the science fit.
As a result, I feel there is a certain folly to retrospectively applying maths to works of art as a means that resonates with viewers. Its application to beauty reduces itself to ridicule and along with it, the true fascination and the richness of both the art and the science. The ‘golden ratio’ is interesting and the fibonacci sequence a joyous fascination. One only needs to see its application to how evolution has applied it to nature. But this is not a same in beauty.
Orthodontics: science and art in paradox
Here is my view: Orthodontics in its planning is a science, in its diagnostics it is a science and an art and in its final execution, it is an art.
Our work has reference points based on research to aid orthodontic treatment planning for enhanced facial appearance. We need reference points for reproducibility, predictability and comparison of results. Unlike art, we cannot treat patients on ‘how we feel’. Patient treatment should have a firm foothold of evidence base. So, in our orthodontic planning we assess facial planes and ‘aesthetic lines’ and x-ray analysis. There is variability in the interpretation of these results and how we execute orthodontics with these results towards beauty it can be very personal indeed.
Artistic delivery at Evolution Orthodontics
The following treated case at Evolution Orthodontics fulfils the ‘Golden Ratio’ when changes in teeth ratios is beneficial:
However, there were no callipers or micrometers used in the treatment of this case. However, it met the golden ratio to a large degree. Of course, there is the small matter of good fortune and an appreciation of detail and beauty.
At Evolution orthodontics, the science is applied with understanding and it is with experience and appreciation of art that beautiful results are achieved.
Is beauty in the eye of the beholder?
Although beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, the feeling of being beautiful exists solely in the mind of the beheld.

So, is there anything that defines beauty?
Beauty: ‘it is what it is’
A creation born within one’s spiritual truth that has no yardstick save from its creator.
